Nineteen year old Mateus Herdy accompanied JS riders Joel Parkinson, Luke, Dusty and Dingo in the water for an evening session at URBNSURF Melbourne. Although many top surfers revere his potential, Mateus was humbled to be able to share the surf and vibe with some living legends. “These guys are my childhood heroes. It was one of the most fun sessions ever, equivalent to a great day in the ocean – the vibe was magic with everyone talking and hooting”.
Riding his favorite 5’8 Monsta 2020, Mateus wasted no time to take his razor sharp game to URBNSURF’s waves, nailing some electrifying airs, speedy barrels and open-face snaps. “I wanted to get my Ally-Oop down, so I practiced it a lot,” said Mateus. A few days later, he returned to the ocean. “It was crazy. I landed every Alley Oop I went for. I was like, ok, so what’s next?”
With aspirations to one day claim a world title and compete in the Olympics, Mateus, like many surfers at large, is now aware of the benefits that consistent, high performance waves can have on performance. “Just imagine the possibilities if you could surf here all the time?” exclaimed Mateus. “The sky’s the limit, literally! I seriously think crazy airs will play a big part in the future and here we can practice them all day long.”
